A carefree tale about the friendship between Michael, who is Catholic, and Rachel, who is Jewish, set against the backdrop of postwar London. The film revels in Michael and Rachel’s fantasy world of royal encounters and exotic journeys. Directed by Canary Island-born Phillip Leacock, younger brother of groundbreaking documentarian Richard Leacock, Hand in Hand shares the similar immediacy and intimacy of the senior Leacock’s films. Surprisingly and effortlessly shot by Freddie Young, the Oscar-winning cinematographer of David Lean’s grand epics Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Doctor Zhivago (1965), and Ryan’s Daughter (1970).
DIRECTED BY: Phillip Leacock. WRITTEN BY: Diana Morgan, Leopold L. Atlas, Sidney Harmon. WITH: Loretta Parry, Philip Needs, John Gregson, Sybil Thorndike. 1961. 75 min. UK. B&W. English. 35mm.
