Meilen “Mei” Lee, a 13-year-old girl from Toronto, discovers she has more to worry about than whether she can get tickets to see her favorite boy band when she finds that, following a family tradition, she transforms into a giant red panda at times of emotional distress. Writer-director Domee Shi won the 2018 Animated Short Film Oscar for her touching Bao, and her feature debut, which was nominated for Animated Feature Film, is an equally impressive mix of identifiable emotions and cultural specificity, finding room for kaiju-style spectacle and original songs written by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell.
On the last Saturday of every month, the museum's Family Matinee is an accessible screening where we offer open captioning, keep the theater dimly lit, and maintain a lower volume for viewers who are neurodiverse.
