In a change of pace for the former cinematographer, Nicolas Roeg directed this delightful horror fantasy, based on the 1983 novel by Roald Dahl, that became one of his strongest and most beloved films. Young Luke Eveshim (Parenthood’s Jasen Fisher) is vacationing in Norway with his loving grandmother (actor-director Mai Zetterling) when they run afoul of a coven of witches, led by a gloriously campy Anjelica Huston. A collaboration with Jim Henson Productions, it was the final film Henson personally worked on before his passing in 1990, and his company created the typically imaginative and expert creature effects.
On the last Saturday of every month, the museum's Family Matinee is an accommodative screening where we offer open captioning, keep the theater dimly lit, and maintain a lower volume specifically for neurodivergent viewers.
DIRECTED BY: Nicolas Roeg. WRITTEN BY: Allan Scott. WITH: Anjelica Huston, Mai Zetterling, Bill Paterson, Jasen Fisher. 1990. 91 min. USA. Color. English. Rated PG; suitable for ages 9+. DCP.
